Unit 9 · Project 3

Fine Detailing

Fine detailing is what separates a good project from a great one. This is where you add the surface decoration, the finishing touches, the small details that make the piece feel complete and intentional. Work slowly and carefully — the details are what people notice up close. This is also the time to fix anything that didn't go quite right in core construction.

Objectives

  • 1
All surfaces finished — no raw edges, exposed structure, or unintentional gaps
  • 2
At least 3 distinct detail elements added beyond the core structure
  • 3
Any construction problems from the previous step addressed
  • 4
    Piece is approaching display-ready quality

Materials

  • Detail materials specific to your project
  • Fine brushes, needles, or tools for precision work
  • Reference: your original proposal and blueprints

Tips & Techniques

1Step back from your work every 20 minutes — you stop seeing things when you're too close
2Details should feel connected to the overall design — not random additions
3Less is often more — one well-executed detail beats five rushed ones
4Compare your piece to your original blueprints and proposal — are you meeting your own goals?
