Unit 8 · Project 1

Mini Web Frame

Before working on your dreamcatcher, you'll practice weaving on a small cardboard frame. You'll warp the frame (set up the vertical threads) and then weave the weft (horizontal threads) over and under in a plain weave pattern. The goal is to develop consistent tension and even spacing. Your practice weaving should be at least 3x3 inches and demonstrate at least 2 different weft colors or materials.

Objectives

  • 1
Frame is warped evenly with consistent spacing
  • 2
Weft woven in plain weave (over-under) pattern
  • 3
At least 2 colors or materials used in the weft
  • 4
Weaving is at least 3x3 inches
  • 5
Tension is consistent — no loose loops or puckering

Materials

  • Cardboard frame (provided)
  • Warp thread (cotton or linen)
  • Weft yarns in 2+ colors
  • Weaving needle or tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Tips & Techniques

1Warp threads should be taut but not so tight they bow the frame
2Push each weft row down firmly with your fingers or a comb before adding the next
3Alternate which side you start from each row — this locks the edges
4If you lose track of over/under, look at the last row and do the opposite
