Unit 7 · Project 3

Traced Canvas Panel

Using your printed stencil, you'll transfer your pattern design onto the canvas panel that will become the front of your pillow. You'll cut the stencil, position it on the canvas, secure it with tape, and trace the design lightly in pencil. This step is about accuracy and planning — getting the design centered, checking the repeat, and making sure everything is positioned before any paint touches the canvas.

Objectives

  • 1
Design is centered on the canvas panel
  • 2
All stencil pieces cut cleanly with no ragged edges
  • 3
Design traced in light pencil — visible but erasable
  • 4
Stencil positioned and secured before tracing begins

Materials

  • Your printed stencil
  • Craft knife and cutting mat
  • Canvas panel (provided)
  • Pencil
  • Painter's tape

Tips & Techniques

1Cut on a proper cutting mat — not a table or your sketchbook
2Change your craft knife blade if it starts dragging — a dull blade tears instead of cuts
3Fold the canvas in half both ways to find the center before positioning your stencil
4Tape the stencil down on all sides — it will shift if you don't
