Unit 8 · Project 3

First Edition (3 Prints)

Pull your first edition of 3 prints from your completed block.

Your block is carved — now print it. Pull a first edition of at least 3 prints on quality paper. Focus on consistency: same ink amount, same pressure, same registration for every print. Your first edition is the freshest printing of the block — the ink coverage is at its best and the block is at its sharpest. Select your 3 best prints for the edition.

Objectives

  • 1Print a minimum of 6 copies and select your best 3
  • 2Achieve consistent ink coverage and registration across all 3 prints
  • 3Print on quality paper (provided)
  • 4Allow prints to dry completely before handling

Materials

  • Carved block
  • Block printing ink
  • Brayer
  • Quality paper
  • Registration guide (tape on table)

Tips

  • Set up a registration system before you start — tape guides on the table for consistent paper placement
  • Roll ink in an X pattern on the inking plate to ensure even coverage on the brayer
  • Apply firm, even pressure — use a baren or the back of a wooden spoon
  • Print more than you need — you'll have rejects, and that's expected
