Notan Versions 1, 2 & 3
Develop your strongest thumbnail into 3 refined Notan compositions at increasing scale.
You've found your strongest thumbnail — now develop it. You'll create 3 refined versions of your chosen Notan design at increasing scales: Version 1 at 4×4 inches, Version 2 at 6×6 inches, Version 3 at 8×8 inches. As you scale up, you'll refine the edges, adjust the balance, and make intentional decisions about every shape. Each version should be cleaner and more resolved than the last. By Version 3, you should have a design that's ready to transfer to a block.
Objectives
- 1Create Version 1 at 4×4 inches — refined from your thumbnail
- 2Create Version 2 at 6×6 inches — further refined with cleaner edges
- 3Create Version 3 at 8×8 inches — final, block-ready design
- 4Submit all 3 versions showing the progression
Materials
- Black marker, ink, or cut paper
- White paper in 3 sizes
- Ruler and compass for clean edges
Tips
- Use a light box or window to trace and refine between versions
- Each version should fix the problems you see in the previous one
- Cut paper (black paper on white) can help you move shapes around before committing
- Version 3 should be your cleanest, most intentional work
