Unit 2 · Project 4Final Project

Printed Texture Grid

Print your carved block multiple times and arrange the prints into a final grid edition.

Printing is where the work comes alive. You'll ink your carved block and print it multiple times, then select your best prints and arrange them into a final grid composition — combining the photographic texture grid from Project 1 with your hand-printed block prints. This final piece shows the full journey: from photographing texture in the world, to analyzing it, to translating it into a carved block, to printing it as a repeatable image. Edition, arrangement, and presentation all matter here.

Objectives

  • 1Ink and print your block a minimum of 6 times on quality paper
  • 2Select your 4 best prints based on ink coverage and clarity
  • 3Arrange the 4 prints into a grid composition
  • 4Sign and number your edition (e.g. 1/4, 2/4)

Materials

  • Carved linoleum block
  • Block printing ink (water-based)
  • Brayer (ink roller)
  • Quality printing paper
  • Baren or wooden spoon for pressing

Tips

  • Roll ink in multiple directions to get even coverage on the brayer
  • Apply firm, even pressure when printing — use a baren or the back of a spoon
  • Print more than you need — you'll have rejects, and that's normal
  • Let prints dry completely before stacking or arranging
