Unit 2 · Project 1

12 Texture Photo Grid

Photograph 12 different textures and arrange them into a cohesive grid composition.

Texture is everywhere — but most people walk past it without seeing it. This project trains your eye to find and capture surface quality through photography. You'll photograph 12 distinct textures from the world around you: natural, man-made, rough, smooth, organic, geometric. Each photo should fill the frame with texture — no backgrounds, no context, just surface. Then you'll arrange all 12 into a grid composition that feels visually balanced and interesting. The grid itself becomes a piece of art.

Objectives

  • 1Photograph 12 distinct textures — no two should be the same surface
  • 2Each photo must fill the frame completely with texture
  • 3Arrange the 12 images into a balanced grid composition
  • 4Consider value, contrast, and visual rhythm in your arrangement

Materials

  • DSLR or phone camera
  • Adobe Express or Canva for grid layout
  • Variety of locations: school, home, outdoors

Tips

  • Shoot in raking light (light coming from the side) to make texture pop
  • Get close — macro or close-up mode reveals details you can't see otherwise
  • Mix scales: some very fine textures, some coarser ones
  • When arranging the grid, alternate light and dark textures for visual rhythm
